Some Aromatherapy Oils and their therapeutic effects

 

How to Use Essential Oils

The most effective ways to introduce essential oils into the body are:

Skin Applications/Massage (M): For both the body and face, mix 6 drops of the essential oil to every 1 10ml of carrier oil.

Infant 2 yrs to 5 yrs: Use 1 drop per 10ml Carrier Oil/Base Cream (face and body).

Child 6 yrs to 12 yrs: Use 1 drop per 10ml Carrier Oil/Base Cream (face) Use 3 drops per 10ml Carrier Oil/Base Cream (body).

Adult 13yrs and above: Use 2 drops per 10ml Carrier Oil/Base Cream (face). Use 6 drops per 10ml Carrier Oil/Base Cream (body).

Bath (B): Add 6 drops of the essential oil to a warm full bath and soak for 15 minutes. Only use oils in the bath if specifically recommended on the label.

Inhalation (I): Add 6 drops of the essential oil to 1 litre of steaming water. Cover the head with a towel and steam for 5 minutes, while inhaling vapours.

Vapourisation (V): Add 6 drops of the essential oil to a vapouriser.

Direct Application (D): Normally used only when instructed by a health care professional or where specifically recommended. Small localised area only.

Compress (C) Add 6 drops to 1 litre of water, Place a soft cloth over the surface where the essential oil tends to float. Lightly squeeze out excess moisture and place on skin. It is advisable to use the appropriate water temperature for your specific problem:

Cold Water:                sprains, bruises, headaches
Warm Water:             skin treatments
Hot Water:                  boils, abscesses, arthritis, rheumatism

 

Aromatherapy Oils

ANISEED (Illicium verum seed)

Not to be used during pregnancy. May irritate sensitive skin.

Temporary relief of bronchial cough and congestion and relief of symptoms of colds and flu: (1) if coughing  persists, consult your health care professional.

Aids in digestion and assists in the treatment or prevention of flatulence: (M) massage in a clockwise direction, into the stomach area. If symptoms persist seek medical advice.

Temporary relief of the pain of rheumatism and muscular aches: (M).

 

ARNICA (Arnica montana flower)

Do not use during pregnancy without professional advice.

For the treatment of BRUISES and relief of SPRAINS: massage directly, undiluted, into affected area. Repeat as often as required. Do not apply to broken skin.

 

AVOCADO (Persea gratissima fruit flesh)

For the relief of symptoms of eczema and for treatment of the effects of psoriasis on the skin: apply direct, undiluted to the affected area. Do not use for prolonged periods without consulting a health care professional.

For treatment of sunburn and minor burns: gently smooth onto the skin as often as required.

A carrier oil for therapeutic massage and facial blends, for dry and mature skins.

 

BASIL (Ocimum basilicum herb top fl)

Do not use during pregnancy.

To help provide stamina and endurance: (V). For temporary relief of nausea: (M) stomach area. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice. To help relieve stress, mild anxiety insomnia and nervous tension: (M).

 

BERGAMOT (Citrus aurantium var bergamia fruit peel)

Do not use before exposure to UV light (sunlight & solariums.)

Helps relieve mild anxiety, nervous tension and stress: (B,V).

Treatment of boils, pimples, acne and relief of symptoms of cold sores: (D).

Suitable for oily and combination skin types: (M,C).

 

BLACK PEPPER (Piper nigrum fruit)

Temporary relief of the pain of arthritis and rheumatism: (M).

Assists in the maintenance of peripheral circulation: (M).

To assist in the treatment or prevention of flatulence: (M) into stomach area in a clockwise direction. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.

 

CALENDULA (Calendula officinalis flower)

A mild antiseptic assisting in the treatment of cuts (by keeping clean and fighting infection), minor burns, insect bites, nappy rash, cracked and rough skin: gently smooth undiluted into skin as often as required.

A carrier oil for therapeutic facial and hand formulations.

 

CEDARWOOD (juniperus virginiana stem wood)

Do not use during pregnancy.

Temporary relief of bronchial cough, sinusitis and symptoms of catarrh: (1). If coughing persists, consult your health care professional.

Treatment of dandruff: (M) with jojoba carrier oil firmly into hair and scalp. After a few minutes wash out with a mild shampoo.

Relief of symptoms of eczema and the treatment of acne: (M) with jojoba carrier oil into affected area.

Helps relieve stress and nervous tension (M,B,V).

 

CHAMOMILE 3% In Jojoba Oil (Matricaria recutita flower)

Do not use if suffering from low blood pressure.

For relief of premenstrual symptoms: massage undiluted. Use only as directed and consult your health care professional if pain or symptoms persist.

For relief of headaches and to help relieve insomnia, nervous tension and stress: massage undiluted into forehead and temples.

To relieve symptoms of eczema, dermatitis, and treatment of acne, boils and burns: (D).

 

ROMAN CHAMOMILE 3% in Jojoba Oil (Anthemis nobilis flower)

Do not use if suffering from low blood pressure.:

Temporary relief of headaches and to help relieve insomnia, stress, nervous tension and mild anxiety: massage undiluted into forehead and temples.

Relief of symptoms of eczema and treatment of acne: (D).

 

CITRONELLA (Cymbopogon nardus leaf)

May irritate sensitive skin.

Temporary relief of symptoms of cold and flu: (I,V).

As an antiseptic deodorant for areas with excessive perspiration: (M,B).

 

CLARY SAGE (Salvia sclarea herb top fl)

Do not use during pregnancy. Do not use if suffering from epilepsy.

Relief of muscular cramps, aches and pains: (M,C).

Relief of premenstrual symptoms : (B,M) stomach area. Use only as directed and consult a health care professional if pain or symptoms persist. May cause drowsiness.

 

CLOVE BUD 25% in Jojoba oil (Syzygium aromaticurn flower bud)

Temporary relief of pain of arthritis and rheumatism and relief of sprains and bruises. Massage with 16 drops in 10ml carrier oil into affected area.

Treatment of acne and tinea: massage as above into affected area. If symptoms persist seek the advice of a health care professional.

Temporary relief of symptoms of colds and flu: add 16 drops to 1 litre steaming water, cover the head and inhale the vapour.

 

CYPRESS (Cupressus semperivens twig leafy young)

Do not use during pregnancy .

Temporary relief from the discomfort of haemorrhoids: mix 6 drops cypress oil to 10ml hypericum oil: apply locally. If symptoms persist, consult a health care professional.

To assist in the maintenance of peripheral circulation: (M).

Temporary relief of muscular pains (M): affected area.

Assists in the treatment of fluid retention: (M) firmly. if fluid retention persists, seek medical advice.

Suitable as a cosmetic oil for oily skin: (C,M) with jojoba carrier oil.

 

EUCALYPTUS 25% in Jojoba Oil

For the relief of sinusitis and the symptoms of mild upper respiratory tract infections. (I,M).

 

EVENING PRIMROSE (Oenothera biennis seed)

For relief of premenstrual symptoms: take 2.5ml orally (half a 5ml spoon) twice daily. Use only as directed and consult a health care professional If pain or symptoms persist.

Relief of symptoms of eczema and the effects of psoriasis on the skin: apply direct to the affected area and adults take 2.5ml orally (half a 5ml spoon) twice daily. Do not use for prolonged periods without consulting a health care professional.

A carrier oil for therapeutic facial blends. Suitable for dry skin and helps clear blemishes: (D).

 

FENNEL (Foeniculum vulgare seed)

Do not use during pregnancy or by persons suffering epilepsy. may irritate sensitive skin.

To aid in digestion, and to assist in the treatment or prevention of flatulence or nausea: (M) stomach area in a clockwise direction. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.

Assists in the treatment of FLUID RETENTION: (M) affected area.

FRANKINCENSE (Boswellia carterii stem gum)

GERANIUM (Pelargonium graveolens leaf)

Temporary relief of bronchial cough and the symptoms associated with laryngitis and catarrh : massage direct into upper chest and back. If coughing persists, consult your health care professional.

Suitable as a cosmetic oil for dry, mature, sensitive or inflamed skin: (M,C,B).

 

JOJOBA (Simmondsia chinensis seed oil fixed)

To relieve symptoms of eczema and to relieve the effects of psoriasis on the skin: (D), to affected area. Do not use for prolonged periods without consulting a health care professional.

As a daily treatment to control DANDRUFF: massage firmly into hair and scalp, leave a few minutes, then wash hair with a mild shampoo.

 

JUNIPER BERRY (juniperus communis fruit)
